Official polls be damned -- it turns out we should all pay closer attention to The Simpsons.

The Fox comedy correctly predicted, a full 16 years ago, that an eventual Donald Trump presidency would someday come to fruition. Welcome to November 9, 2016, -- the country has elected the former reality star (who has zero experience in office, no less!) as its forthcoming leader.

In the 2000 episode "Bart to the Future," noted hell-raiser Bart Simpson gets a glimpse at his possible future self. Future Bart pays his sister, Lisa, a visit, where viewers come to learn she’s been appointed the first “straight female President.”

Upon his visit to the White House, Bart overhears Lisa on the phone talking about the state of the country's finances. She says, "As you know, we've inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump."

Longtime Simpsons writer Dan Greaney commented on the episode earlier this year, when the threat of a Donald Trump presidency suddenly became a glaringly real possibility, despite his increasingly bizarre campaign, which was often full of racist, sexist, xenophobic rhetoric.

"It was a warning to America. And that just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom," Greaney told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane."

"What we needed was for Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing," he continued, "that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that's why we had Trump be president before her."

Great.
