At this rate the Capital Region is going to get automated cars before we even get Uber.

News 10 is reporting that the Governors office has just passed legislation to allow companies to begin testing "autonomous technology" in the state during a year long pilot program.

Of course there will be some extensive rules and regulations for companies that apply for the program like:

The company must have a $5 million insurance policy for any vehicle tested, submit a report on demonstrations or tests, undertaken pursuant to a DMV permit, to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles no later than March 1, 2018

Apparently Governor Cuomo has said:

New York has emerged as one of the nation’s leading hubs for innovation, and as we invite companies and entrepreneurs to reimagine transportation technology, we will encourage the development of new, safe travel options for New Yorkers

Now, I'm all for innovation and "new safe travel options" but lets be real here, how is that we can allow companies to test vehicles without drivers throughout our state when we can't even get them to allow us ridesharing services? I mean I know they are supposed to finally be allowing them to service Upstate New York sometime in July but I'm kind of still holding my breath until it actually happens.

Also, I'm not really sure how I feel about automated cars on the roadways? I know I'm definitely not ready to ride in one yet but hey I guess that's why testing goes down right?

What do you think are you excited for this new technology to be hitting the roads in the Capital Region?
