Let us go back to the fall of 1996 with the Spice Girls -- "Say You'll Be There"

My pick for this week's TBT Rewind Video Pick is the music video for "Say You'll Be There" that was filmed on September 7 and 8, 1996, in the Mojave Desert in California. It was inspired by the the very popular movie of that time, Pulp Fiction (although I don't see any similaries to it) and Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! The girls to adopt fictional identities, an idea that Ginger Spice came up with.

In the opening credit montage, Melanie Chisholm played "Katrina Highkick", Geri Halliwell's alter-ego was "Trixie Firecracker", Emma Bunton took on the role of "Kung Fu Candy", Victoria Beckham played "Midnight Miss Suki", and "Blazin' Bad Zula" was Melanie Brown.

The video features the Spice Girls as a band of jiggling female karate-warriors, who use martial arts and throwing star like influenced weapons at what appears to be variously placed fish bowls full of water. Never really understood that part.

Then more jiggling.

The video won for Best Pop Video at the 1996 Smash Hits! Awards, for Best Video at the 1997 BRIT Awards, and was nominated for the Viewer's Choice at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards. It won the FAN.tastic Video honour at the 1997 Billboard Music Video Awards, and was also nominated for Best New Artist in a Video.
