A report has been released that has revealed the cause of the mudslide in Schenectady that occurred back on Jan. 28.

We first reported about two homes being demolished after the Schenectady mudslide several months back. Now according to The Daily Gazette, a report written by the Dente Group of Watervliet and released in the city geotechnical report on Monday revealed that a broken water line at 11 Barney St. was the cause of the mudslide. Water from the service line went into the dirt basement at the home and into the hillside, causing the hill to fail. The report said that the hill was composed of sand and clay layers and that the water traveled through the sand layers, stopping at the clay layers and building up with nowhere to go causing the hill to fail. A $94,000 stabilization project of the hill was done in February.
